Excry contains 14 named NPCs, and four of them — Warden Sable Kess, Orrin Vale, Mother Iyra, and Pip — are available on a fresh save with no prerequisites at all. The remaining ten are gated by quest flags, reputation thresholds, in-game clock windows, or held items, and two of them (Sister Nemet and Karo the Fence) are mutually exclusive, so no single playthrough can fill every slot in the catalog. Below is the complete roster with locations, roles, unlock requirements, and the numbers behind each unlock.

The three gate types that hide NPCs
Almost every “missing NPC” complaint in Excry traces back to one of three gate types, and they behave differently. Flag gates are permanent once cleared — completing “Shattered Seam,” for example, unlocks Foreman Drek Halloway for the rest of the save. Clock gates are temporary and reset daily: Karo the Fence simply does not exist on the map between 04:01 and 20:59, no matter how many times you reload. Reputation gates are the slowest and the only ones that can expire, since faction standing can drop if you take hostile contracts against that faction later in the run.
Emberlow Village: the four you cannot miss
Warden Sable Kess
Standing at the north watchtower of Emberlow Gate, Kess is the game’s primary quest hub and the source of the “Ashfall Contract” that opens Act 1. She is present from the moment you spawn and stays put through the entire main story. Her dialogue changes four times across the campaign, but her location never does.
Orrin Vale
Vale works the forge on the east side of the village square and handles repairs and gear upgrades. His tier-1 stock is available immediately; tier-2 stock requires Iron Rank, which is awarded after three completed main quests. Knock between 20:00 and 06:00 and you get a one-line refusal rather than a shop window — the forge clock is a hard gate, not a soft one.
Mother Iyra
Iyra’s apothecary sits behind the village well. To unlock her you need to hand over 5 Emberbloom, which grow along the ridge north of the village and respawn every 2 in-game days. She stocks stamina and resistance draughts and is the only reliable early source of the latter.
Pip
Pip, the cartographer’s apprentice, sits on the wall beside the south gate between 08:00 and 18:00. Every chalk rubbing you bring her — there are 4 in the starting region — reveals one fast-travel marker. She is temporarily removed during the Act 3 siege and returns only after you retake the gate, so if you want the markers early, collect all four rubbings before Act 3 begins.
Coppervein Reach: flag, reputation, and clock gates
Foreman Drek Halloway
Found at the main mine entrance, Halloway opens the Deep Shaft once you finish “Shattered Seam.” He is available from roughly level 12 onward and is the only NPC who grants Deep Shaft access, so skipping him locks out an entire resource tier.
Surveyor Anwe
Anwe camps on the northern ridge and sells region maps. She will not speak to you until you show Pip’s Surveyor’s Charter, which Pip hands over only after all 4 chalk rubbings are delivered — a direct dependency between two NPCs in different regions.
Sister Nemet
Nemet represents the Order of the Ninth and requires Order reputation 40 plus a refusal of the Smuggler’s offer during Act 2. She teaches two faction skills and opens the Order’s supply cache.
Karo the Fence
Karo appears in the alley behind the Coppervein tavern between 21:00 and 04:00, and only if the Sealed Ledger is in your inventory. The Ledger drops from the Act 2 Smuggler. Accepting the Smuggler’s offer makes Karo available and permanently closes off Sister Nemet; refusing it does the reverse.
Glasswater Fen: the moving and conditional NPCs
Marrow
Marrow never stands still. He rotates through three camps on a 3-day cycle: Camp A on days 1, 4, and 7; Camp B on days 2 and 5; Camp C on days 3 and 6. He trades hunting materials and is the cheapest source of treated hide in the region.
The Hollow Choir
The Hollow Choir only manifests at dusk, between 19:00 and 21:00, and only if a Resonance Bell is in your inventory. Bells drop from the bell-bearing enemies in the flooded chapel. This NPC teaches the two resonance skills, and there is no alternate trainer for either.
Lady Ostrel
Ostrel appears at the drowned chapel between 12:00 and 15:00 and will only engage you at level 28 or above with Fenwalker reputation at 60. She is an optional duel, not a quest, and her reward is a unique weapon rather than currency.
The Ninth Vault: post-campaign NPCs
The Archivist is present as soon as you reach the Vault after Act 4 and trades lore entries for Ninth Ciphers. Vessel-07 requires all 9 Ciphers to be handed in and then joins as a companion, also unlocking a permanent shortcut through the Vault’s lower levels. The Warden Eternal is the last entry in the catalog and appears only once all 14 regional Echoes have been defeated.
What each unlock actually costs
| NPC | Unlock cost | Typical time investment | Payoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mother Iyra | 5 Emberbloom | 8–12 minutes | Draught vendor for the rest of the run |
| Pip | 4 chalk rubbings | 35–50 minutes | 4 fast-travel markers |
| Orrin Vale (tier 2) | 3 main quests | ~2.5 hours | Tier-2 gear and cheaper repairs |
| Sister Nemet | 40 Order reputation | ~4 hours of faction work | Two faction skills, Order cache |
| Karo the Fence | Sealed Ledger (1 drop) | ~10 minutes | Contraband stock, no reputation grind |
| Vessel-07 | 9 Ninth Ciphers | ~3 hours 45 minutes | Companion plus Vault shortcut |
| The Warden Eternal | 14 regional Echoes | 6–8 hours | Final optional encounter |
To put the Vessel-07 figure in perspective: the 9 Ciphers come from 9 separate Echo encounters averaging about 22 minutes each, which is 198 minutes, plus roughly 25 minutes of Vault traversal between them — about 3 hours 45 minutes of focused play. Karo, by comparison, costs a single item drop and about ten minutes of walking, which is why he is the better pick for a short playthrough and the worse pick for a completionist run.
Fastest route to full NPC coverage
- Clear all 4 chalk rubbings before Act 3. Pip disappears during the siege, and the markers she grants make every later step shorter.
- Hand in the Emberbloom early. Mother Iyra’s draughts make the Coppervein section survivable at low level.
- Push to Iron Rank before entering Coppervein. Vale’s tier-2 stock removes the need to buy mid-tier gear twice.
- Refuse the Smuggler’s offer if you want Nemet. This is the single irreversible decision in the catalog.
- Carry the Sealed Ledger if you sided with the Smuggler. Without it in your inventory, Karo will not spawn even during his clock window.
- Hold a Resonance Bell through the Fen. The Hollow Choir has no alternate spawn condition.
- Reach Fenwalker rep 60 before Act 4. Ostrel’s duel flag expires once the campaign closes.
Which NPCs to prioritize by situation
| Your situation | Prioritize | Reason | Safe to skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| First playthrough, under 20 hours | Pip, Iyra, Vale, Karo | Low cost, high convenience, no rep grind | Nemet, Warden Eternal |
| Crafter or trader build | Marrow, Vale, Anwe | Material and map access compounds | Ostrel, Warden Eternal |
| Lore completionist | Archivist, Hollow Choir, Vessel-07 | All three are the only sources of their content | None — all required |
| Combat-focused run | Nemet, Ostrel, Warden Eternal | Skill trainer plus two unique fights | Marrow, Anwe |
| Second playthrough, opposite faction | Karo instead of Nemet | The pair is mutually exclusive | Whichever you took first |
Common mistakes and missable windows
The most frequent error is killing the Act 2 Smuggler before looting the Sealed Ledger, which removes Karo from the save permanently with no warning message. The second is fast-traveling out of Emberlow during the Act 3 siege window — Pip’s return flag depends on you being present when the gate is retaken. The third is treating shop hours as advisory: Orrin Vale, Karo, the Hollow Choir, and Lady Ostrel all enforce their windows strictly, and waiting at the location does not advance the clock faster. Finally, Fenwalker reputation decays if you accept contracts against the Fen after Act 4 begins, so Ostrel’s 60-rep threshold can slip below the requirement even if you already met it once.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many NPCs are in Excry?
There are 14 named NPCs across four regions: four in Emberlow Village, four in Coppervein Reach, three in Glasswater Fen, and three in the Ninth Vault. A handful of unnamed vendors and trainers exist outside this list, but they carry no unique dialogue, quests, or unlock conditions.
Which Excry NPCs are missable?
Four are missable. Pip is temporarily unavailable during the Act 3 siege, Karo and Sister Nemet are mutually exclusive, and Lady Ostrel’s duel flag expires once the main campaign closes. Every other NPC in the catalog remains available for the rest of the save once unlocked.
Can I unlock Sister Nemet and Karo the Fence in the same playthrough?
No. The choice happens during the Act 2 Smuggler encounter, and the game does not offer a way to reverse it. Nemet requires refusing the Smuggler’s offer; Karo requires carrying the Sealed Ledger that the Smuggler drops. Seeing both requires two separate saves.
Where is Marrow right now?
Marrow rotates through three camps on a 3-day cycle. He is at Camp A on days 1, 4, and 7; Camp B on days 2 and 5; and Camp C on days 3 and 6. Camp A is the ridge overlook, Camp B is the dry dock, and Camp C is the north treeline.
Do Excry NPCs move or disappear after the main story?
Most stay exactly where they were. Pip returns to the south wall after the siege is resolved, the Ninth Vault NPCs remain permanently, and the Emberlow and Coppervein vendors keep their normal hours. Only Lady Ostrel is removed from the world after Act 4.
What level do I need to fight Lady Ostrel?
Level 28 is the hard minimum, and you also need Fenwalker reputation at 60. Meeting only one of the two conditions will not trigger the duel — she will simply repeat a single line of dialogue and the encounter prompt will not appear.
