Here is the part nobody tells you about slab furniture: the woodworking is the easy half. Reading the slab before you commit
Before a single tool comes out, spend twenty minutes with the board. Sight down its length from one end, check it for twist with a pair of winding sticks, and note where it rocks on a flat surface. A slab with mild cup is cheap to fix. A slab with serious twist eats thickness fast, because flattening always cuts down to the lowest high spot — you can easily lose a quarter inch or more of finished thickness to a wind you did not measure.
Moisture is the other thing you cannot sand out later. The old rule of thumb for air drying is roughly a year per inch of thickness, and indoor furniture generally wants wood down in the single digits for moisture content, so barn-dried does not automatically mean shop-dry. A barn is unheated; your living room is not. Bring the slab into the space where it will live, sticker it off the floor so air moves on both faces, and give it a few weeks before you commit. - Bark and soft spots. Bark will eventually let go no matter what you spray on it, and punky or bug-riddled areas need stabilizing before they need finishing.
Flattening the slab
A slab this size won’t fit through any planer I own, so I built a router sled — two rails and a flat baseboard — and hogged the high spots off with a big straight bit. It’s slow, dusty, and weirdly satisfying. Take light passes and check for flat with a straightedge constantly.
The sled itself is the tool, so build it like one. The rails have to be coplanar with each other, not merely level, and the crossmember carrying the router must not sag in the middle — any deflection transfers straight into a crowned slab. Dealing with the cracks

Buy epoxy by its pour-depth rating and its published cure schedule, not by the picture on the label. Thin coating or “table top” resins are formulated for skim coats and will overheat, yellow, or crack if you dump them into a deep void; deep-pour formulas trade speed for a slower, cooler cure that can handle thickness in one shot. Check the mix ratio, the working time, and the recommended shop temperature — cold epoxy cures cloudy and soft, and pouring in an unheated garage in winter is the single most common way people ruin an otherwise good kit.

Blow or vacuum the surface between stages too, because a single coarse grain dragged along under a fine disc leaves a swirl you will only see under finish. The finish
I wanted the grain to pop, so I went with a wipe-on oil finish, four coats, buffed between each. The walnut went from dusty gray to deep chocolate with that three-dimensional shimmer only oil gives. Hairpin legs bolted to the underside, and it was done.
Oil is the right trade for a piece like this, but understand what you are trading. Oil and hardwax-oil finishes look and feel better than anything else on walnut and are genuinely repairable — a scuff sands and re-oils in an afternoon. A wiping varnish or polyurethane gives noticeably more resistance to water rings and hot mugs, at the cost of that in-the-wood look and easy spot repair. If your coffee table lives with small children and no coasters, lean toward the film finish. If you want the grain, choose oil and accept the maintenance. Either way, wipe off every bit of excess, respect the recoat window on the can, and give the whole thing days to weeks of cure time before you load it up. Epoxy areas will not absorb oil the way the wood does, so expect to buff those spots to match the sheen.
Legs, and the mistake that cracks slabs
Hairpin legs suit lighter slabs and shorter spans, and they keep the whole thing looking mid-century rather than industrial. Heavier tops want thicker steel — U-shaped, trapezoid, or a wood trestle — and the things to check before buying are steel gauge, weld quality, and whether the mounting plate is thick enough not to flex. Thin hairpins splay under a heavy slab, and no finish hides that.
The critical detail is how you attach them. A slab still moves seasonally across its width, so any hardware that pins it rigidly across the grain is fighting wood movement it will not win. Use elongated or oversized holes, figure-8 fasteners, or Z-clips so the top can breathe. This is the single most common way a finished slab table develops a crack months after it looked perfect.

- Legs: spend here rather than saving. Metal thickness and powder coat quality show immediately.
