How to Choose Lumber: What I Look At Before I Buy a Board

Half the problems people blame on their tools started at the lumber rack.

You cannot make a good table out of a twisted board. Wood moves, and a board that is already fighting itself will keep fighting after it is in your project. Learning to read a board at the rack saves more frustration than any tool upgrade.

I learned that from a cherry side table. The stock looked spectacular in the stack, I did not sight down any of it, and I found out in the clamps that one leg blank had a slow twist. The joints closed under pressure and then quietly opened again over the next month. That was not a tool problem. I paid for it at the register and carried it home myself.

Here is the part nobody tells you at the rack: picking boards is mostly subtraction. You are not hunting for perfect stock, which barely exists and costs a fortune where it does. You are sorting flaws into three buckets — the ones you can machine away for free, the ones that cost you width or length, and the ones that make a board worthless at any price.

Sight down every board

Pick it up, hold one end at eye level and look along its length. You are checking four things:

Bow — curve along the face. Mild bow can be jointed out of short pieces.

Crook — curve along the edge. Harder to fix, wastes width.

Twist — corners not in the same plane. The worst one. Put it back.

Cup — curve across the width. Often fixable if you can rip and rejoin.

Those four are not equally bad, and the ranking shifts with how you plan to cut. Length is your ally: a gentle bow in a board about to become three 16-inch rails is effectively straight, because you cut the curve into pieces too short to matter. The same bow in one long tabletop plank eats thickness you cannot spare.

Crook costs you width, and width is the one dimension you cannot add back at the jointer. Sight the edge, judge how wide a straight piece you could rip out of that curve, and if that is narrower than the part you need, walk away whatever the price. Then lay each candidate on the flattest surface in the building and press the corners. If it rocks, that is twist confirming itself, and it takes ten seconds to find out.

Read the end grain

The growth rings on the end tell you how the board will move. Tight, near-vertical rings (quartersawn) are the most stable and the most expensive. Wide, curved rings (flatsawn) are cheaper and more prone to cupping — the board tends to cup away from the heart side.

For a tabletop, alternate the ring direction across your glue-up and any movement stays small and even instead of turning the whole top into a bowl.

Quartersawn and riftsawn stock costs more because a mill gets fewer of those boards out of a log. What you are buying is stability, plus the ray fleck in white oak. Pay for it on wide tops, on drawer sides, and on anything with a breadboard end. Do not pay for it on painted cabinets and jigs.

While the end is in front of you, look for pith, the soft center of the tree. If the rings curve around a point inside the board rather than off its edge, it will crack along that line, and careful drying will not save it.

Moisture matters more than species

Kiln-dried lumber for interior furniture should be around 6–8% moisture content in most of the US. Construction lumber from a big-box store is often much wetter and will shrink and twist as it dries in your shop.

The practical habit: bring lumber into the shop and let it sit for a week or two before building. Stack it with stickers between the boards so air moves.

Two mistakes cost people the most here. The first is trusting a kiln-dried label on lumber that has sat outside under a tarp since spring, because wood re-absorbs moisture happily. The second is milling to final thickness the day the boards come home. Break stock down slightly oversize, wait a few days, then mill.

Aim at the environment the finished piece will live in, not the one it is built in. If your shop is an unheated garage and the furniture is going into a heated house, acclimate the boards indoors if you can.

Species: choose for the job, not the photo

Choose the species from the job the wood has to do, then look at pictures. Beginners do it the other way around and end up learning hand-cut joinery in figured maple, which is a hard way to learn anything.

What separates a good pick from a bad one at each price band

Budget band. Pine, poplar, soft maple. The species is not the risk, the drying and the knots are. A good pick has tight sound knots, no pith, and a moisture reading in line with the stack. A bad pick is the clear board off the top of an outdoor pile that reads wet. Suits jigs, shop furniture and painted work.

Middle band. Hard maple, ash, red oak, everyday cherry. The wood is dependable, so you are shopping for yield and grain match. A good pick is two or three boards from the same lift with similar color and ring spacing. A bad pick is one wide bargain board with a knot exactly where the leg blanks must come from.

Premium band. Walnut, wide cherry, quartersawn white oak, figured stock. You are paying by the board foot for one specific thing — width, color, figure or stability — so make sure it lands inside your cut list rather than in the offcut. Skip this band for your first projects. Cutting into wood you are afraid of makes you tentative, and tentative work is worse work.

Board feet, briefly

Hardwood is usually sold by the board foot: thickness in inches × width in inches × length in inches ÷ 144. Rough lumber is measured before surfacing, so a board sold as 4/4 (one inch) finishes around 3/4 inch. Budget roughly 20–30% waste on top of your finished dimensions.

An example, because the formula reads worse than it works: a 4/4 board 6 inches wide and 96 inches long is 1 × 6 × 96 ÷ 144, or exactly 4 board feet. The thickness in that sum is the rough thickness, so you pay for the wood the planer removes. 8/4 leg stock costs twice as much per square foot of surface as 4/4.

The waste allowance is arithmetic, not padding. Snipe, jointing losses, an end check you cut back, one part milled wrong — it adds up, and faster when you are matching grain across drawer fronts. Write the cut list first, add the allowance, then shop.

Where I buy

  • Local hardwood dealer — best selection, best prices, lets you sort
  • Sawmills — cheapest, usually rough and often wet
  • Big-box stores — convenient, expensive per board foot, heavily picked over
  • Reclaimed sources — beautiful, watch for nails and staples

A local hardwood dealer is the right default for nearly everyone. Sawmills reward people with a moisture meter, a truck and patience, because cheap wood you cannot use for a year is not cheap if you need it this month. Big-box stores are for softwood, sheet goods and emergencies. Reclaimed stock suits people who enjoy the hunt.

Things I check before paying

  • Nails or staples in reclaimed stock — one hit destroys planer knives
  • Pith (the centre of the tree) in the board — it will crack
  • End checks running deeper than a few inches
  • Sticker stain and mould on stacked lumber
  • Boards from the top of an outdoor stack — usually the wettest

Two of those deserve a note. End checks run deeper than they look, so cut back until you find clean wood and then recount your yield. Sticker stain means the whole lift sat damp, which is worth knowing even about the boards that look clean.

The mistakes that cost me the most

  • Trusting the grade. Hardwood grades describe how much clear area a board yields. They say nothing about flatness or moisture, so a top-grade board can still be a twisted one.
  • Buying exactly the footage on the cut list. No project has zero waste, and driving back for one more board costs more than the board.
  • Taking home a board I already knew was marginal. The long drive is not a reason. Buy nothing rather than the wrong thing.

FAQ

Can I use construction lumber for furniture? Yes, if you let it dry properly first. Douglas fir and southern yellow pine make sturdy shop furniture. Buy oversize, sticker it in the shop, and accept that you will lose the occasional board to twist.

Rough or surfaced lumber? Surfaced if you have no jointer or planer. Rough is cheaper if you can mill it, and it shows you what you are buying instead of a skim-planed face that hides a bow.

How much extra should I buy? 25% over your cut list, more if the boards look marginal or the visible parts need matched grain.

How should I store boards at home? Flat on stickers if you have a level space, on end against a wall if you do not. Keep them off bare concrete and away from anything that dries one face faster than the other.
