Do I need a real dust collector instead of a shop vac?
Only if you run big machines. A vac is high suction and low volume, which is ideal for small ports on sanders, routers, and saws. A jointer, planer, or drum sander needs the opposite — lots of air through a wide duct — and no shop vac will keep up no matter how strong it feels in your hand.
Will the cyclone separator cost me suction?
