Score the line with a utility knife or masking tape when the veneer is thin and expensive.
My repeat offenses, in case they save you a sheet: running the blade too high, pushing too fast through the last few inches so the cut burns, and trusting the fence scale instead of a tape, which once left me with maple ply parts a full 1/16 inch narrow across a whole project.
