The first cabinet I was genuinely proud of died in about ninety seconds. Two weeks of careful joinery, a door that closed with a soft click, and then a heavy coat of polyurethane flooded on at nine at night in a cold garage because I wanted to see it finished. By morning it was cloudy, tacky, and sagging down every stile. Stripping it back took longer than building it had.
Finishing is where good work goes wrong, and almost always for the same three reasons: the surface was not properly prepared, the finish was applied too thick, or it was rushed between coats. Every failure I have made since, and every one I have been asked to fix for somebody else, traces back to one of those three.
Here is the part nobody tells you: finishing is barely a skill of application. It is a skill of looking and of waiting. The people whose work looks flawless are not better with a brush; they prepared a surface they could actually see, then left it alone long enough to harden.

Preparation is most of the job
Sand progressively — 80 or 100 to remove machine marks, then 120, 150, 180. Stop at 180 for most film finishes; going finer can actually reduce stain absorption and gains you little.
Do not skip grits. Each one exists to erase the scratches left by the one before it, and 150 will not remove 80-grit gouges however long you push it around. If a grit feels like it is taking forever, you either skipped a step or your abrasive is worn out and burnishing rather than cutting.
Between grits, wipe the surface and look at it in raking light — a lamp at a low angle across the surface. Scratches and glue spots invisible under overhead light appear immediately, and they will appear even more clearly under finish.
Glue squeeze-out is the number one finishing failure. Dried glue seals the wood and blocks stain, leaving pale patches. Scrape it off completely while it is rubbery, then check with a damp rag — wet wood reveals glue spots before you finish, when you can still fix them.
Then get the dust off properly. Vacuum, brush out corners and pores, and wipe with a cloth lightly dampened with mineral spirits under an oil-based finish or water under a water-based one. The damp wipe previews how the wood will look under a clear coat. Under water-based finishes it also raises the grain, which you knock back with one light 180 pass.
Abrasives are worth being fussy about. Buy on grit range first, since an assortment spanning 80 to 220 covers nearly all furniture work, then check that disc diameter and hole pattern match your sander, because a mismatched pattern strangles dust extraction and extraction is what keeps paper cutting instead of clogging. Aluminum oxide is the sensible default, ceramic earns its price on rough stock, garnet is a hand-sanding pleasure. Cheap packs shed grit and tear at the edge, so you burn three discs where one should do. Mid-range packs grade consistently. Premium discs mainly buy longevity, which matters if you sand daily and very little if you build one project a month.

Durability and repairability pull against each other. Hard films shrug off water, heat and cleaners, but you cannot spot-fix them — you sand a whole surface and recoat. Oils and hardwax oils wear rather than fail, and they blend invisibly when you refresh a worn patch. A dining table or a desk earns the durable film; a bookcase or a small box does not, and choosing poly for them buys difficulty with no return.
Two things the table cannot show. Color: oils and oil-based poly add warm amber and keep deepening, while water-based finishes stay close to raw wood, which is safer on maple, ash and anything you want to keep pale. And speed: shellac dries in minutes, oil-based poly wants hours. Fast finishes forgive dust and punish hesitation; slow finishes forgive hesitation and collect dust.
What separates a good can from a bad one
Price bands here are less about outright failure than about how much work you take on. Bargain cans tend to be thin and inconsistent, so the same film takes more coats, and a can that has skinned or gelled on a shelf will never level properly however carefully you apply it. Buy the smallest container that will finish the project, and check the label states recoat time, cure time, thinner and cleanup. Mid-priced cans from brands you can look up are where most beginners should live. The premium tier buys higher solids, better leveling and finer sheen control, and it only repays you once your prep deserves it.
Who each option suits
- Wipe-on oil — first projects and anything you handle rather than abuse. Skip it on kitchen tables and wet areas.
- Hardwax oil — tabletops and floors, for anyone happy to refresh occasionally rather than strip once. Skip it if you want a glassy built-up film.
- Wipe-on poly — the best durability-to-difficulty ratio available, and the right default for beginner furniture. Skip it if the job must be done today.
- Brushed poly — large flat panels, in a warm, still, clean space. Skip it in a dusty garage.
- Shellac — sealing, washcoats, quick projects, repairs to old furniture. Skip it where alcohol, water rings or heat are likely.
- Spray lacquer — production work and complex shapes, with real ventilation and respiratory protection. Not a first finish.
Start with a wipe-on finish
Wipe-on oils and wipe-on poly are nearly impossible to get badly wrong. No brush marks, no runs, no dust nibs of any consequence. You apply thin coats with a rag, wipe off the excess, and repeat. Four thin coats beat one thick coat every time, in every finish.
The details that matter: use lint-free cotton, not paper towel and not a synthetic cloth a solvent can melt. Work an area you can manage, flood it, then wipe until the surface looks damp rather than wet. Wipe off before the finish starts to drag, and if it has begun to set, leave it and correct it on the next coat instead of tearing at it. And check the temperature — labels ask for normal room conditions, and a cold garage is exactly how a coat stays sticky for a week.

Thin coats, wiped on and off. The most forgiving way to get a good-looking, durable finish with no spray equipment.
Staining, if you must
Softwoods and some hardwoods (pine, maple, cherry) blotch badly with pigment stain. Use a pre-stain conditioner or a shellac washcoat first, and always test on an offcut from the same board — not a different board, the same one.
Conditioner runs on a clock, so read it: apply, wait the stated time, then stain inside the window the label gives you, because conditioner left to harden overnight seals the wood more than you intended. If you want color with less blotch risk, dye penetrates rather than pooling in pores, and gel stain sits mostly on top, which makes it the forgiving option on blotch-prone panels and on end grain that would otherwise drink stain and go black.
My honest opinion after years of this: cherry and walnut look better with clear finish and time than with any stain.

And go gently on edges and corners, or you will sand through the color there and only see it under the first coat.
The expensive mistakes are both about time. Recoating before the previous coat has hardened traps solvent underneath, and the film stays soft, prints under a warm mug and never properly cures. Putting the piece into service too early does the same damage from the other side: a top that feels dry will still take an imprint from felt pads or a tablecloth for days. Leave it longer than you want to.
Fire safety — genuinely important
This is the one section where the consequence is not a ruined tabletop.
